[ DAY ONE ]
A 3-axis CNC router.
A moving-gantry router with a 9 kW HSD spindle over a 2400 × 1300 mm bed. Right now it's a dark shape you don't understand. Scroll, and you'll commission it one subsystem at a time — until every part is something you know.
▼ SCROLL TO BEGIN
[ OVERWHELM ]
Where do you even start?
Dark and unlabeled, it's hundreds of parts and no way in. But commissioning follows an order: level the base, true the bed, prove the motion, set up the spindle, then power on. Four subsystems — one at a time.
[ SUBSYSTEM 01 — BASE FRAME & GANTRY ]
Level the backbone.
The welded steel base carries the moving gantry. Set it on its leveling feet, put a precision level across the bed both ways, and shim until it's flat — every micron of accuracy downstream starts here.
CHECK · Level ≤ 0.1 mm/m · Anchor bolts torqued · Gantry square to bed
[ SUBSYSTEM 02 — SPOILBOARD BED ]
Surface the bed.
Vacuum table with an MDF spoilboard — the datum every job references. Before the first cut you fly-cut the spoilboard flat with a facing bit so the surface is parallel to spindle travel, not to the factory floor.
CHECK · Spoilboard fly-cut flat · Vacuum ≤ −0.8 bar · Zones sealed
[ SUBSYSTEM 03 — RAILS & RACK DRIVE ]
Prove the motion.
X and Y ride profile linear rails driven by helical rack-and-pinion; Z runs on a ballscrew. Grease the rails, mesh the pinions to spec, then jog each axis end to end feeling for any bind before you trust a rapid.
CHECK · Rails greased · Rack backlash < 0.05 mm · Rapids to 60 m/min clean
[ SUBSYSTEM 04 — HSD SPINDLE ]
The business end.
A 9 kW air-cooled HSD spindle on the Z-axis — the only part that touches the work. Seat an ER32 collet, fit the dust shoe, and run the warm-up cycle so the bearings reach temperature before you load a real tool.
CHECK · Warm-up 5 min to 12k rpm · ER32 collet seated & torqued · Dust shoe fitted
[ POWER-ON ]
Home it and set zero.
Every subsystem is commissioned. Power up, run the homing cycle so the axes reference off their limit switches, set your work origin (G54) at the corner of the stock, and prove the program with an air pass above the material.
HOMING… X / Y / Z OK
[ MASTERY ]
You commissioned it.
Four subsystems, one machine — base, bed, motion, spindle — no longer a dark shape but a map you can navigate. The next fault won't be a mystery; it'll be a subsystem you know.
